Toying Around Reviews - NECA TMNT Jim Lawson Style Box Set.

Updated: Jul 30, 2023

What's going on, welcome back to a new Toying Around review. today we are taking a look at the Jim Lawson-inspired designs for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4 pack from NECA. Jim Lawson started on Turtles during the original volume of the Ninja Turtles in Vol 1 and remained on the series until the end of Vol 4. The National Entertainment Collectibles Association or NECA is an American manufacturer of collectibles typically licensed from films, video games, sports, music, and television that is based in New Jersey. The company was founded in 1996 and has over 60 licenses for which it produces products.

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's take a look at the packaging.

Let's take a look at this 4 pack box. The front of the box has the turtles fighting Shredder clones with the Foot and Shredder himself waiting in the back. All the artwork is Jim Lawson-inspired. Turning the box to the side we have pictures of Leo and Ralph. The back of the box gives us some of the turtles fighting the foot in some action promo shots. We also get a nice group shot of the guys with a to-be-continued at the bottom letting us know some of the other figures that are out or that will be coming out. Flipping the box around again we get pictures of Donny and Mike. The cool part of this box is that it opens up in the front to let you get a good look at the turtles and everything that comes inside the box.

INSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's take a look at how the figure comes packed inside.

Taking the plastic shell out of the box we can see all the turtles and mounds of accessories we get with this set. NECA has also included a nice backdrop for this set. It's the turtles together as they watch the body of the shredder burn.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Taking the Turtles out we finally get to see how awesome they look. The turtles all look the same but each one has a different head sculpt and different markings on him as well, speaking of the markings, NECA really did a good job here making the turtles look like they came right out of the comic book. Now if you aren't sure which turtle is which, well NECA made that easy for you, just pop the heads off and there will be a little letter inside the head to tell you who is who.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

The turtles each come with their normal weapon. Leo with his Katana, Don with his Bo staff, Mikey with his Nunchaku, and Ralph with his Sai. Ralph also comes with a hood you can put on him and an arm you can swap out that has a bandage on it. Each turtle also comes with an extra mask tie to make it look like it is flowing in the wind. We also get 3 ninja stars. lastly, we get some extra hands, wide open hands, chopping hands, and some grabbing hands.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

THE TURTLES' ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

MUSHROOM PEGGED HEAD - This allows you to turn the head 360 degrees around

BALL-HINGED SHOULDERS - Gives the arm 360-degree rotation and also the ability to raise and lower the arm.

UPPER BICEP SWIVEL - This cut lets you turn the whole arm below the cut 360 degrees.

DOUBLE JOINTED ELBOWS - This allows you to bend the arm about 90 degrees.

SWIVEL HINGE WRISTS - It allows you to be able to turn the figure's wrists in a full 360-degree circle while also bending them up and down.

BALL JOINTED LEGS - This allows the legs to move out to the side along with some front and back motion.

DOUBLE JOINTED KNEES - The joint allows you to bend the leg itself back to the butt of the figure. (mine are hard to get to move, and I feel like I will brake the figure if I keep trying)

ANKLE SWIVEL - The ankle swivel lets you turn the feet a full 360 degrees.

BALL-HINGED TAIL - This lets you move the tail up and down, left and right in 360 degrees.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

The Turtles stand right around 6.5 inches tall. Here is Leo standing next to some older playmates' classic-style turtles.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB 5/5 - The paint job is perfect on all of them, They feel and look like they came right out of the comic book.

FIGURE SCULPT 5/5 - The sculpting is on point. They look like Jim Lawson's artwork in 3D.

POSING 5/5 - I don't have any issues with him, I can get them in just about any pose I would want to do.

ACCESSORIES: 5/5 - They come with some much, I don't know what else you could ask for.

DURABILITY 5/5 - The plastic on them is nice and I don't feel like they are going to break as some older NECA figures would. the joints are nice and move with ease.

OVERALL SCORE 5/5 - I love this set so much. I am so happy they made it and that I was able to get one.
