N.E.C.A. TMNT Peter Laird Sketch Turtle - Toying Around Reviews

For this week’s new review, we’ll be examining NECA’s rendition of Pete Laird’s “The First Turtle” sketch. The story goes that while living together, one night while eating pizza and drinking beer, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird jokingly proposed the idea of Ninja Turtles, a parody of the 80’s comic book Daredevil. Kevin sketched his turtle, and Peter drew his. They then collaborated on the artwork, and the rest is history. NECA, an American manufacturer of collectibles, is based in New Jersey. The company, founded in 1996, has over 60 licenses for which it produces products, including those based on films, video games, sports, music, and television.

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's check out the packaging.

Both turtles come back in a window box-style rectangle. The top of the box features the Nickelodeon and NECA logos. The turtles are clearly displayed in the middle of the box, accompanied by all their accessories. The bottom left corner of the box informs us of the turtles’ names, “The First Turtles,” by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The other side of the box showcases the classic logo and some artwork of the turtles. Turning the box to the side, we once again see all the logos at the top, with the plastic of the window wrapping around from the front. This design is ideal for collectors who want to keep the figures in pristine condition within their boxes. The bottom of the box features additional artwork of the turtles, this time showcasing only their heads. The back of the box features our two turtles in dynamic action poses on the left, while the right side displays all the figures that have been released and those that are yet to come. Turning the box around once more, we get more artwork of the turtles and the 40th-anniversary logo.

INSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's take a look at how the figure comes packed inside.

Taking the figures out, we observe that the turtles are packed in a plastic tray, accompanied by some of their accessories. The remaining accessories are stored in a separate tray behind them. Behind the tray, there’s a slip-in cover that features a classic comic book New York street background.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Alright, let’s examine Peter Laird’s Turtle out of the box. NECA has truly outdone themselves in creating a 3D replica of Peter’s iconic artwork from the 80s. I particularly admire their black-and-white rendition, as the red on the figure stands out exceptionally well.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

Both Turtles can utilize the accessories included in the box. They come with two nunchucks, a spinning effect nunchuck, a tonfa, two sai, two katana blades, a bo staff, an alternate head, and both open hands.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

PETERS TURTLE'S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

MUSHROOM PEGGED HEAD - This allows you to turn the head 360 degrees around

MUSHROOM PEGGED NECK - This allows you to turn the neck 360 degrees.

BALL-HINGED SHOULDERS - Gives the arm 360-degree rotation and also the ability to raise and lower the arm. You do get more movement without the cap on.

SINGLE JOINTED ELBOWS - This allows you to bend the arm just below 90 degrees.

SWIVEL HINGE WRISTS - It allows you to turn the figure's wrists in a full 360-degree circle while also bending them up and down.

HINGED JOINTED LEGS - This allows the legs to move out to the side along with some front and back motion.

SINGLE JOINTED KNEES - The joint allows you to bend the leg itself back to the butt of the figure. (mine are hard to get to move, and I feel like I will break the figure if I keep trying)

ANKLE SWIVEL - The ankle swivel lets you turn your feet 360 degrees.

BALL-HINGED TAIL - This lets you move the tail up and down, left and right in 360 degrees.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

Our new Peter Laid Turtle stands at about 5 inches tall. Here he is standing next to Kevin’s Turtle and two Playmates Toys Turtles, the sketch Turtle Ralph, and the Mirage Comics Ralph.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB 4.5/5 - The figures are black, white, and red; you can't mess that up. The red color that is on the figures is done very well, with no issues or bleeding of the color onto the white. The only real issue was the paint on the hinges; my review station looks like I went to a Hollywood after-party with all the white flecks on it.

FIGURE SCULPT 5/5 - These guys look amazing; I am so happy with how they turned out. They look just how Peter and Kevin drew them.

POSING 4/5 - You can get them into some decent poses; double-hinged elbows and knees would have made them that much more perfect, but they are good for what NECA did.

ACCESSORIES: 5/5 - They come with some much stuff; I don’t really know what else anyone could even ask for.

DURABILITY 4.5/5 - The plastic is strong, and I don’t worry about it breaking; I just wish the paint didn’t fleck so much on the hinges.

OVERALL SCORE 4.6/5 - If you were able to get the green versions from NECA, then you don’t need these unless you are a completist and need them all.

RETAIL COST: $59.99
