Toying Around Reviews - Masters of the Universe: Origins He-Man (Cartoon Collection)

Today we will be checking out the all-new cartoon collection for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe from Mattel. This new line of figures is based on how the characters looked in the 80s Filmation cartoon series.

PACKAGING:

Before we open this up, let's check out the packaging.

He-Man comes on a blister card that has the cartoon Castle Greyskull in the background. The classic cartoon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe logo is up at the top with He-Man himself displayed below in the bubble. On the bubble, we have a logo saying Cartoon Collection that is done up in the old Filmation style again letting us know that this figure is based on how he looked in the 80s Filmmation cartoon. Turning the box to the side we get a good look at the figure from the side, This is great for any of our collector friends who like to keep the figure mint on the card. On the back, we get some artwork of He-Man at the top with a little blub letting us know what episode the figure's accessories are coming from, below that we get the cross-cell art of the “action features” and pictures of the rest of the figures in this 1st wave. Moving the box around again, we get another look at He-Man from the side.

INSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's take a look at how the figure comes packed inside.

Taking He-Man off the blister we get to see that inside he comes packed in plastic with a few small plastic ties. We also get this little paper letting us know what parts are swappable. Yes, the MOTU figures all have some interchangeable parts so you can mix and match heads, arms, torsos, and feet.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX:

Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.

Taking He-Man out and turning him around we get to see that this guy is made on a different body than we got a few years ago with our classic He-Man figure. So Mattel really went all out for this new Cartoon collection giving us new boxes, new accessories, and even new body bucks.

ACCESSORIES:

Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.

He-Man comes with the Sword of Power, this time made to look like it did in the cartoon. The Sword of the Ancients, as seen in the episode MASKS OF POWER, and finally a mini-comic, THE MASK OF MAGI, all figures in this first wave come with this same comic.

ARTICULATION:

How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!

HE-MAN’S ARTICULATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

BALL JOINTED NECK - allows you to turn the head 360 degrees.

BALL-HINGED SHOULDERS - Gives the arm 360-degree rotation and also the ability to raise and lower the arm.

SINGLE JOINTED ELBOWS - This allows you to bend the arm about 90 degrees.

SWIVEL BALL HINGE WRISTS - This cut allows you to turn both wrists a full 360 degrees while also bending them up and down.

WAIST SWIVEL - With this cut you can turn the figure around 360 degrees at the waist.

SINGLE JOINTED KNEES - This joint, although limited, allows you to bend the knees. The bend is less than 90 degrees.

HINGED ANKLES WITH ROCKERS - The ankle hinge allows you to bend the foot front and back. The rockers allow you to rock the ankles towards the outside and inside of the legs of the figure.

SIZE COMPARISON:

How does the size of this figure compare to others?

This new He-Man stands right around 6 inches tall. He does stand just a little taller than our older Origins figure because his legs are just a little bit straighter than before.

RATING:

What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?

PAINT JOB 5/5 - The paint that is on this guy is very well done, but it is kinda hard to mess up when you only need a little bit of paint on the figure.

FIGURE SCULPT 4.5/5 - The only downside to the figure is the face just looks a little bit off, can't put my finger on it but it just doesn't feel right

POSING 4/5 - You can get this guy into just about any pose you would like. if the muscles weren't as bulky I feel like you could get just a little bit more out of him

ACCESSORIES: 4.5/5 - He should have come with an extra hand like the old Origins figures did

DURABILITY 5/5 - The plastic is strong, don't feel like it will break.

OVERALL SCORE 4.6/5 - The figure is great overall, if you are a MOTU fan or a fan of the old cartoon I feel like you need to add him to your collection.

RETAIL COST: $19.99
